Will I Be Left Without Teeth During All on 4 Treatment?

If you are considering pursuing All-On-4 dental implant treatment, you may be wondering what the process has in store for you. A common fear for many people is that they will have to go without teeth during the implant placement process. Continue reading to learn more about what to expect during your All-On-4 implant treatment.

What are All-on-4 Dental Implants?

All-On-4 implants are designed to completely replace the upper or lower set of teeth. For patients who wish to have a more permanent solution as opposed to traditional dentures, All-On-4’s are an excellent option.

To begin the process, four implants will be directly inserted into the patient’s jawbone. Implants are titanium devices that are designed to mimic the natural structure of the root of the teeth; they are incredibly durable and provide a strong and sturdy anchor for the implant dentures which will screw into place over the top of the implants.

Once placed inside the mouth, the implant denture is permanent, and will not move. Traditional dentures usually require the use of dental adhesive and can be quite a nuisance for the patient, as they tend to move around in the mouth. With an All-On-4 implant denture, the patient can have peace of mind knowing that their dentures will stay in place.

Am I a Candidate for All-On-4 Implant Dentures?

In order to determine if you are a candidate for implant dentures, your dentist will conduct a thorough examination of your bone density and study your medical history.

Since implants are placed directly into the bone, it is necessary for the patient’s bone structure to be healthy and strong. There are also certain other conditions that may prevent successful treatment.

The following conditions may prevent you from qualifying for All-On-4 implant denture treatment:

  • Diabetes
  • Bone disease (osteoporosis, etc)
  • Active chemotherapy or radiation treatment
  • Inadequate bone structure
  • Actively smoking or using tobacco products

Your medical history will be thoroughly reviewed and discussed during your implant consultation. Your dentist will make recommendations as they see fit, and they will get in contact with your general practitioner.

To determine your candidacy for dental implants, your dentist will have a 3D image taken of your jaw. They will examine the image to determine if there is enough strong and healthy bone to support the placement of a dental implant.

If you do not have adequate bone structure, your dentist will work with you to develop a treatment plan that works best for you. In most cases, the alternative to All-On-4 implant dentures is individual implants or traditional dentures that simply rest on the patient’s gum line rather than being held into place by implant anchors.
