Traditionally, teeth whitening is completed with the use of peroxide whitening. Here at FY Smile, we use something called PAP+ rather than peroxide whitening; continue reading to learn why.

What is PAP+?
To help you better understand how you can benefit from PAP+ teeth whitening, it is important to understand what it is. To do that, we will first have to break down some important (and interesting!) science.
PAP stands for Phthalimidoperoxycaproicacid. PAP is an organic peracid that performs exceptionally well when used to dissolve stains in the tooth enamel. Like traditional peroxide whitening treatment options, PAP uses an impressive oxidising action that physically breaks down stubborn stains and brightens the overall shade of the tooth.
Believe it or not, you may already use products containing PAP on a daily basis – this impressive substance is commonly used in a wide range of laundry detergents as a whitening agent. It is also used in some toothpastes and mouthwashes.
PAP is now being implemented into professional teeth whitening products and is producing incredible results.
Hismile worked diligently to create the revolutionary PAP+, a groundbreaking formula that is designed to maximize the benefits of PAP and includes invaluable ingredients such as Hydroxyapatite and Potassium Citrate.
How Exactly Does PAP+ Work?
Time for some more interesting science facts! The PAP+-powered teeth whitening process can essentially be broken down into four simple (yet effective) steps:
- Phthalimidoperoxycaproicacid (PAP+) enters through the layer of enamel and breaks down molecules that hold color
- Lost minerals are redeposited into the teeth by hydroxyapatite
- The activity level of dental sensory nerves is decreased by potassium citrate
- The gingival tissue is not affected
PAP+ Whitening Study
A 2020 in vitro study completed prior to the official launch of PAP+ produced tangible and impressive results that truly prove both the effectiveness and value of PAP+ whitening as a whole.
The study concluded that PAP+ actually led to a 12.9 unit increase to the microhardness of tooth enamel.
The study also produced the following results:
- 100% of participants achieved whiter teeth
- 61.9% of participants achieved 3+ shades whiter
- 0% of participants experienced heightened sensitivity or pain.
To put it simply, this study provided proof that this method of teeth whitening poses no harm to the integrity and overall health of the teeth while still being able to provide exceptional results for the patient – that’s impressive.
Peroxide vs PAP+ Teeth Whitening
So, what exactly is the difference between peroxide and PAP+ teeth whitening?
The most notable difference between peroxide and PAP+ whitening agents is crucial: it comes down to something very small that makes a big impact. When peroxide works to lift stains and brighten the tooth enamel, it releases something called free radicals.
Free radicals are molecules with unpaired electrons. The free radicals work to break down colored organic compounds that have become trapped within the tooth enamel. While this process is effective, it has the potential to lead to unpleasant side effects such as increased sensitivity, demineralization, and irritation of the gums.
PAP+ is unique in that it is able to successfully break down stains and discoloration in the enamel without releasing harmful free radicals. Ultimately, this helps the teeth avoid any risk of damage or increased sensitivity or pain for the patient.
Being able to help our patients achieve the bright and white smile of their dreams without placing the teeth at risk for irritation, pain, or sensitivity is absolutely crucial to us here at FY Smile.
Benefits of PAP+ Teeth Whitening
It is currently estimated that over 22% of Australians now regularly whiten their teeth, with just 1 in 3 Aussie adults choosing to pursue professional whitening rather than some sort of at-home system.
As your trusted dental professionals, we will always highly recommend having any sort of teeth whitening treatment done under the clinical supervision of a dental professional. Not only does this help provide you with the best possible results, but it also helps to ensure that you can successfully avoid soft-tissue burns, increased sensitivity, generalized pain, damage to the tooth enamel, and (in worst-case scenarios) ingestion of whitening products.
Professional teeth whitening comes with a myriad of benefits, and PAP+ provides the following:
- Peroxide-free whitening
- Protection against incrased sensitivity or pain
- Tooth enamel remineralization
- Clinically proven instant whitening results
- No harmful free radicals
- No impact on enamel or gums
- To learn more about how you may personally benefit from pursuing PAP+ to lift stains or discoloration from your teeth, be sure to speak with your trusted dental professional.

Keep Your Smile Shining Bright
Of course, we wouldn’t be your trusted dental professionals if we did not make sure that you have all of the information and tips that you need to succeed with a beautiful and healthy smile – both before and after pursuing professional whitening treatment in our Double Bay dental clinic.
In order to prevent tooth enamel staining, avoid the following:
- Tobacco products
- Wine, coffee, and tea
- Soda or energy drinks
Some additional causes of tooth staining include:
- Side effects of prescription medication
- Chemotherapy
- Poor oral hygiene
- Failure to attend professional dental cleaning appointments
- Aging
Ensuring that you are properly taking care of your teeth at home is the first step. Be sure that you are brushing thoroughly for two minutes, twice daily. Brushing should always be accompanied by thorough flossing between each tooth, and it is highly recommended to use an ADA-approved mouthwash after each brushing and flossing session.
Avoid the harmful and stain-causing substances mentioned above, and be sure to consult both your dentist and general practitioner for questions or concerns in regards to any prescription medication you may be taking or medical treatments you may be undergoing.
