Root Canal Treatment

Root canal therapy is a type of treatment used when injury or tooth decay causes the pulp inside your tooth to become infected.

Why is root canal therapy used?

Infection inside your tooth can cause a great deal of pain, so it’s best to make an appointment with your dentist if you experience discomfort. If you don’t treat the infection it can also spread through your root canal system and form an abscess – which will be more painful.

How does root canal therapy work?

First of all, you’ll have local anaesthetic to make sure that you can’t feel anything. We do this using a device called ‘the Wand’ which administers the anaesthesia in a slow and controlled way to make the process more comfortable for you.

Then, your dentist will drill your tooth to access the root canal system inside, cleaning it thoroughly to remove the infection and the pulp.

After it has been properly cleaned, it will then be filled temporarily and fitted with a crown. Your dentist will call you back for another appointment to check that all the infection has gone, and then they will permanently fill your tooth.
