Over the years, teeth collect deposits and superficial stains which cause them to appear yellowish. Teeth also discolour with ageing as the enamel thins. This exposes the layer underneath called dentin which is naturally yellow.
Teeth whitening uses a high concentration of hydrogen peroxide to take your teeth from a yellow shade to eight shades whiter with just one visit to the dentist or by using a professional take-home kit.
The in-chair process involves the following steps:
Teeth whitening take-home kits are safe, affordable and cause little to no sensitivity.
The first step is to book a consultation with a dentist, who will examine your teeth. Then your take-home teeth whitening kit will be prepared and clear instructions will be provided on how you need to whiten your teeth at home.
There are two types of home teeth-whitening kits – Day Whitening Kit and Night Whitening Kit. They have different formulas and your dentist will advise you on the correct usage.
The Night Whitening Kit is a preferred option if you would like to leave your trays on overnight while you sleep. You can also use them during the day but they will need to be kept on for 2-4 hours. You can expect your teeth to look up to six shades whiter within six weeks.
The procedures for using Day Whitening and Night Whitening Kits are the same, the only difference is when and for how long you will need to wear your trays.
With the Day Whitening Kits, you will need to wear your trays twice a day and can space the treatments out by doing this once in the morning and once in the evening.
With the Night Whitening Kit, it’s best to put your trays in before you go to bed and leave them until you wake up in the morning.
Here is the process you will need to follow:
Brush your teeth with regular toothpaste as normal.
Insert a drop of tooth-whitening gel into each impression of the trays.
Place the trays gently over your teeth.
Leave the trays on for the time prescribed by your dentist.
Remove the trays and wash them thoroughly with tap water.
Brush your teeth normally with toothpaste.
