Things to know before getting Invisalign Treatment

Are you considering Invisalign treatment? Here are 14 things to know before pursuing treatment.

Invisalign Must Be Worn For At Least 22 Hours Each Day

In order for your Invisalign to properly do its job and shift the teeth into their ideal positions, it is absolutely crucial that you wear your trays for at least 22 hours each day. Make sure that you only take your trays out to eat, drink, and brush your teeth.

Invisalign Can Treat The Same Conditions As Traditional Braces

Believe it or not, Invisalign can treat many of the same issues that are treated with traditional braces, such as crowding, crooked teeth, overlapped teeth, and minor bite issues.

You Must Remove Your Trays To Eat Or Drink Anything Other Than Water

Invisalign trays provide their “invisible” look thanks to the use of clear resin trays. Unfortunately, these trays are easily stained; it is very important that you remove your trays before eating or drinking anything other than water.

You May Need Attachments

Attachments are small, tooth-coloured bumps that are adhered to the surface of the teeth during Invisalign treatment. They are used to provide additional grip and support when tackling more extensive orthodontic cases. Not everyone needs attachments, but some do. (Your orthodontist will tell you if you will need them during treatment).

You May Feel Discomfort When Adjusting To New Trays

Invisalign works by applying continuous pressure to shift the teeth into their desired positions. Because of this, you may feel some pressure or discomfort when you first insert a new set of trays. No worries, the more you wear your trays, the more comfortable they will become.

You May Notice Increased Saliva Production At First

When you get your first set of Invisalign trays, you may notice an increase in saliva production. Not to worry; once your mouth becomes accustomed to the presence of your Invisalign trays, your saliva production will return back to normal.

You Should Brush After Eating And Before Putting Your Trays Back In

If you place your trays back in your mouth directly after eating or drinking, bacteria and food particles remain trapped between the surface of the teeth and your trays. Over time, this places the teeth at risk for developing decay. It is very important that you thoroughly brush and floss your teeth before placing the trays back inside your mouth.

You May Have A Slight Lisp At First

When you first begin your Invisalign treatment, you may notice a slight lisp. As the muscles inside your mouth become accustomed to the presence of the Invisalign trays, you will notice that the lisp will go away. To speed this process up, you may want to practice speaking out loud in the mirror or read out loud to yourself.

Cold Beverages Only

If you intend to enjoy a cup of water while wearing your Invisalign trays, make sure that you have a cold or room-temperature beverage only. Warm or hot beverages can potentially warp the trays, which can have a direct effect on your treatment.

You Will Need To Clean Your Trays Regularly

In order to ensure that there are no harmful bacteria in your Invisalign trays, you will need to regularly clean them. There are a few different methods for cleaning Invisalign trays; the most highly recommended method is to purchase the official cleaning kit made by Invisalign themselves, the Invisalign Cleaning System Crystals. You can also use retainer cleaning products such as DentaSoak or Retainer Brite, water and light liquid soap, or white distilled vinegar and tap water.

You Must Wear Your Retainer After Invisalign Treatment Is Complete

Even after pursuing orthodontic treatment, it is possible for your teeth to shift back into their old positions. Once your Invisalign treatment is complete, you will be given a set of dental retainers to help preserve your new smile. Be sure to wear your retainers as directed – this will help ensure that you can continue to enjoy your beautiful new smile for years to come.

Invisalign Treatment May Not Be Right For Everyone

While Invisalign is an excellent orthodontic treatment method with various benefits, it may not be right for everyone. There are some cases in which traditional metal braces may be the better option. This typically occurs when there is an extensive bite correction, existing dental implants or bridges, or patients with TMJ. A thorough consultation with your orthodontist will help you determine if Invisalign is right for you.

Invisalign Works Quickly

Invisalign Aligners typically take anywhere between 12-18 months, although some treatments may be finished within a year. In fact, you may even begin to see changes in your smile within a few weeks!

You Can Whiten Your Teeth During Treatment

One large attracting factor for many people is the fact that you can whiten your teeth while undergoing Invisalign treatment. For people who are looking to completely change and improve the look of their smile, this is very beneficial.
