The Uses of Dental Monitoring at FY Smile

Here at FY Smile, we strive to provide the most comprehensive dental care possible. That is why we make use of an innovative mobile app known as Dental Monitoring; continue reading to learn more about the uses of Dental Monitoring here at FY Smile.

What is Dental Monitoring?

Dental Monitoring is an intelligent and comprehensive mobile application that allows your dental professionals to remotely monitor your treatment progress and dental health via photos and videos that you take and send in yourself - from anywhere in the world.

We monitor the photos and videos as you send them in, providing you with feedback and guidance directly through the app for ultimate convenience.

At FY Smile, we know that your dental or orthodontic treatment requires constant monitoring; our dedication to the successful outcome of your treatment does not stop the moment you walk out the door.

Using Dental Monitoring, you will be asked to take and send photos of your mouth, allowing us to remotely monitor your treatment progress. This eliminates the chance for disconnect between visits and helps ensure that your treatment is progressing as planned without the need for physical visits to our Double Bay dental office.

With the use of Dental Monitoring, being tethered to frequent in-office dental and orthodontic appointments is a thing of the past. You now have the ability to keep your dental professionals updated on the status of your oral health and treatment without causing a disruption to your daily tasks and activities.

How Does Dental Monitoring Work?

To begin the process, you will be asked to download the Dental Monitoring mobile application to your smartphone. We will walk you through this process to ensure that you have everything set up correctly.

You will be given a ScanBox pro; this tool is an essential part of the Dental Monitoring process that will allow you to successfully take professional-grade images of your mouth at home. You will also be given your very own set of cheek retractors, which will help ensure that the entirety of the teeth and gums are easily visible in the photos and videos you send in through the app.

During your appointment, we will help you set up an account with Dental Monitoring while you are here in the office with us. We will also provide you with detailed instructions on how to navigate the app and use the equipment you have been given. Any questions or concerns you may have will be discussed and answered to ensure that you are completely comfortable using the mobile application on your own at home.

In the case that you have a few questions once it comes time to use the application at home, no worries; we are always just a phone call away.

To take the images and videos outside of the office, simply place the cheek retractors in your mouth to retract the cheeks and reveal your teeth and gums. Next, place your phone inside the ScanBox. The ScanBox actually clicks into place over the cheek retractors; once you hear that click, you will know that the ScanBox is firmly in place.

The app will then walk you through the image/video taking process with clear audible directions. Once you have finished taking the diagnostic images and videos, you will be able to quickly and easily remove both the ScanBox and the cheek retractors. Dental Monitoring will then ensure that everything is sent over to your dentist for evaluation and assessment.

Any comments, tips, or guidance that we may have for you will be given to you through the app, as well. This can be something as simple as directions for more thorough brushing or detailed preventative tips for getting the most out of your orthodontic treatment.

You will have the opportunity to be directly involved with your treatment, which is extremely beneficial and a strong motivating factor for many people. You will also have the ability to view the progress of your treatment using the app’s intelligent timelapse feature. For many patients, being able to physically see how their dental health is progressing can help reinforce the importance of treatment.

Am I a Candidate for Dental Monitoring?

If you have a smartphone and you are able to use the mobile app to communicate with your team of dental professionals here at FY Smile, it is likely that you are a candidate for Dental Monitoring.

The mobile application is compatible with almost all modern smartphones - with a minimum of Android 5 (with flash) or iOS 10.

The Dental Monitoring app is extremely beneficial for a wide variety of treatment applications, but it is most useful in the following scenarios:

  • Remote oral health monitoring for international/regional patients
  • Weekly monitoring for Invisalign and traditional braces
  • Monthly monitoring post orthodontic treatment

Individuals that may benefit considerably from the use of Dental Monitoring include:

  • Individuals with limited transportation options
  • Children who are involved in a wide-range of after-school activities or sports programs
  • Patients who struggle with dental fear or anxiety
  • Individuals who work long hours and have difficulty moving their schedule around
  • University students
  • Individuals who travel frequently for work (or pleasure) purposes
  • Individuals with young children or a large family to care for
  • Individuals who wish to limit their in-person visits due to COVID-19

While most people are ideal candidates for the use of Dental Monitoring during their dental or orthodontic treatment, there may be a few exceptions, including:

  • Individuals who do not own smartphones
  • Elders or children who are not able to easily access and use the app without assistance

Dental Monitoring is an exceptionally beneficial treatment tool that can completely change the way you view your dental or orthodontic visits. If you still are not quite sure if you can benefit from the use of this intelligent mobile application, no worries; we will be happy to help you determine if you are an ideal candidate.

Digital Orthodontic Visits

Whether you choose to pursue Invisalign or traditional braces, orthodontic treatment typically requires frequent in-office visits in order to ensure that treatment is progressing as necessary.

While these visits are crucial for the success of your orthodontic treatment, it can be a bit inconvenient to return to the clinic on such a frequent basis. What’s more is that the visits are typically quite simple and short; they simply provide your dental professionals with the ability to check the progress of treatment and make any changes necessary.

Thankfully, Dental Monitoring eliminates the need for frequent in-office orthodontic visits. Using the Dental Monitoring mobile application, you can take detailed images and videos of your teeth once each week, which we will assess and monitor just as we would during an in-person visit. Any tips or guidance that we may have for you will be sent directly through the app.

If we see any need for a change in treatment or other treatment interference, it is then (and only then) that we will ask you to return to see us in-person.

The Dental Monitoring app provides you with the opportunity to monitor your orthodontic progress in real-time. It can be extremely exciting to watch the smile of your dreams develop before your very eyes.

After your orthodontic treatment is complete, we can continue to monitor your teeth with the help of the Dental Monitoring app, allowing you to make the most of your time without compromising your beautiful new smile.

Digital Oral Health Monitoring

While of course, we ask that you return to our Double Bay dental clinic for your regularly-scheduled check up and cleaning appointments, we find that is is extremely beneficial to monitor our patients’ oral health with the use of the Dental Monitoring app.

Just as we use the app to monitor orthodontic treatment, we can use Dental Monitoring to remotely monitor restorative or aesthetic treatment that you have had done. We can also use the app to keep a close eye on your oral health as a whole; this helps us recognize and intercept issues as soon as they arise.

Benefits of Using Dental Monitoring

As your trusted dental professionals, we value your time just as much as you do. We know that there are times when it may be difficult or time-consuming to make a trip for an in-office visit.

While some things require hands-on treatment in the office, there are certain aspects of your dental or orthodontic treatment which can quickly checked remotely with the help of remote technology like Dental Monitoring.

Gone are the days of shuffling around your busy daily schedule for a brief dental or orthodontic visit. Thanks to Dental Monitoring, we now have the ability to check up on your dental health or the progress of your orthodontic treatment remotely and at your convenience.

Below are some of the most notable benefits of using Dental Monitoring:

  • Comprehensive remote monitoring of your oral health (as part of our Oral Wellness program)
  • Beneficial for international and regional patients who typically need to travel a considerable distance for their in-practice visits
  • Remote weekly monitoring for Invisalign and traditional braces
  • Remote monthly monitoring for patients who have completed their orthodontic treatment
  • Reduced time in the dental chair
  • Simple and easy-to-use mobile application that is compatible with almost all modern smartphones
  • Hands-on involvement in your treatment and dental health - understand the importance of your treatment and watch it progress before your very eyes
  • HIPAA-compliant platform - all personal information is completely protected and private
  • Eliminate unnecessary in-office visits
  • Proactive treatment - quick and timely interception for any and all issues that may arise during (or after) treatment
  • Stay connected with your dental professionals - anytime, and anywhere
  • Help teenagers build dental responsibility and understand the importance of their oral health
  • Attend “virtual appointments” from anywhere in the world

COVID-Friendly Dentistry and Orthodontics

Perhaps one of the most notable benefits of Dental Monitoring is the fact that it helps limit direct in-person contact during your dental or orthodontic treatment. In a post-COVID world, it is important to take all necessary precautions to keep ourselves healthy and protected.

The pandemic altered almost every aspect of our lives; many Australians switched to remote work options, and it is more common now than ever before to have groceries and other essentials delivered right to your front door.

As we navigate this new world, it only makes sense to change the way we approach dentistry, as well. Dental Monitoring provides you with the ability to complete “virutal appointments” with your dentist, limiting face-to-face contact without compromising the level of care that you are receiving.

While of course we work diligently to maintain a clean and healthy clinical environment by following all necessary guidelines and regulations, we highly value the ability to monitor your oral health and treatment progress remotely. Ultimately, we are still able to provide you with a high level of comprehensive dental care while maintaining healthy social distancing whenever it is possible.

The Dental Monitoring application makes it possible for us to limit your in-office visits while continuing to provide personalized top-tier dental and orthodontic care; a win-win for everyone involved.
