How Are Crooked Teeth Fixed with Invisalign

If you struggle with crooked teeth, it is likely that you know how much of a detriment they can be to everyday life. Thankfully, traditional braces are no longer the only option for straightening crooked teeth; Invisalign is a viable and effective option. Today, we’re breaking down how crooked teeth are fixed with Invisalign; continue reading to learn more.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a revolutionary type of orthodontic treatment that makes use of clear, customized, and comfortable aligner trays to straighten and align the teeth - without the use of traditional braces.

First introduced in 1999, Invisalign has completely revolutionized the way we view orthodontic treatment as a whole. Thanks to the clear aligner trays, pursuing orthodontic treatment no longer means sacrificing your self-confidence or the overall look of your smile.

Some of the most notable benefits of Invisalign include:

  • No need for brackets and wires
  • No dietary restrictions; while traditional braces require patients to avoid hard, sticky, or crunchy foods, there are very few restrictions with Invisalign, as the trays can be removed to eat.
  • Trays can be removed and placed back inside the mouth whenever needed (beneficial for eating, drinking, brushing, and flossing)
  • Aligner trays are nearly invisible; patients can pursue treatment discreetly and without major changes to the look of their smile
  • Comfortable for the patient; no risk of brackets or wires poking into the cheeks or gums
  • Easier to properly care for teeth; brushing and flossing are not hindered by brackets or wires like with traditional braces
  • Invisalign is just as effective as traditional braces (as long as the patient properly wears and cares for their teeth and trays)
  • Improved confidence and self-esteem both during and after treatment
  • Aligner trays are made of BPA-free plastic

Below are the steps involved in Invisalign treatment:

  • Invisalign Consultation: During your initial consultation appointment, your orthodontist will take a thorough look at your teeth and jaw. Your expectations for the outcome of treatment will be discussed with you at length. Depending upon the amount and type of orthodontic correction that is needed, your orthodontist will either identify you as an Invisalign candidate or recommend you for braces.

  • Impressions: If you qualify as an Invisalign candidate, detailed impressions will be taken of your mouth. An interactive three-dimensional model will be created from these impressions; this model will serve as a valuable resource for your orthodontist when designing your treatment plan.

  • Treatment Plan Creation: You will then have the opportunity to work with your orthodontist to create a personalized treatment plan. Using the model that was created from your impressions, your orthodontist will determine which type of movement and treatment is needed to produce the smile you desire. You will be provided with an estimation of how long your treatment will take to complete.

  • Treatment Will Begin: Your first set of Invisalign trays will be created and given to you. You will be given detailed instructions on how to properly wear and care for them for the next week or two. After these initial weeks of treatment are complete, you will receive the next set of trays. This will continue until treatment is complete. Invisalign treatment typically takes anywhere between six and eight months, though treatment time generally varies from patient to patient.

  • After Treatment: Once your treatment is complete, you will receive a set of retainers to preserve your beautiful new smile. You will be given instructions on how to properly wear them. At last, your Invisalign treatment is complete! You will now only have to return to the dentist for your regular teeth cleaning appointments. All that is left to do now is enjoy your beautiful new smile!

Can Invisalign Fix Crooked Teeth?

So, can Invisalign fix crooked or crowded teeth? They certainly can!

Invisalign was designed to provide an efficient, modern, and discreet alternative to traditional braces. This treatment method is capable of successfully treating many of the same conditions that are treated with traditional braces, such as:

  • Crowded teeth
  • Crooked teeth
  • Normal bite issues (overbite, underbite, crossbite, or open bite)
  • Small gaps between the teeth

In many cases, patients can enjoy the same satisfactory results from Invisalign that they would enjoy from the use of traditional braces. There are, however, some cases in which a patient’s case might be too extensive or severe to be successfully corrected with Invisalign.

These cases include:

  • Severe crowding
  • Severely crooked teeth (completely rotated in the socket; any tooth rotated over 20 degrees can not be treated with Invisalign)
  • Large gaps between the teeth
  • Severe bite issues (underbite, overbite, open bite, or crossbite)

In these cases, the patient will be informed that they will need to use traditional braces to straighten and align their teeth rather than braces; traditional braces are typically able to tackle more serious or extensive orthodontic cases.

How Exactly Does Invisalign Work?

At first glance, Invisalign might seem too good to be true. A set of clear and comfortable aligner trays that fit perfectly over the teeth and produce a beautiful and aligned smile just like traditional braces without altering the look of the smile during treatment... What’s the catch?

There’s no catch. That’s the beauty of Invisalign treatment; it was designed to allow patients to discreetly and confidently pursue the orthodontic treatment they need and want. With Invisalign, there is no need for brackets and wires to be adhered to the surface of the teeth, changing the overall look of the smile during treatment. You will be able to enjoy showing off your teeth while you undergo corrective orthodontic treatment - completely unaltered.

As previously mentioned, you will receive a new set of trays every 1-2 weeks over the course of your treatment. Each set of trays focuses on straightening a different region of the mouth. The way that the aligner trays work is incredibly clever, but it is actually quite simple; the teeth in the tray are actually just slightly more straight than your actual teeth.

When you place your Invisalign trays inside the mouth, this slight difference in alignment applies continuous pressure that guides your teeth to match the position of the teeth inside the trays. By the time you are ready for your next set of aligner trays, you will have a section of teeth that have been successfully corrected and moved into the proper position.

This process continues for the duration of your treatment; every 1-2 weeks, you will receive a new set of trays that align and correct a different area within the mouth until all of the teeth are successfully shifted into the correct positions. Over the course of treatment, most patients typically receive anywhere between 18-36 sets of trays, though this number varies depending on the number of corrections that are needed overall.

The overall process behind Invisalign is incredibly simple, yet incredibly effective; that’s what makes this orthodontic treatment method so appealing to patients of all ages and backgrounds.

Why Should I Correct My Crooked Teeth?

In some cases, patients may wonder why it is important to correct and straighten their crooked teeth; especially if their crooked teeth do not cause them any pain or discomfort. Some people do not even necessarily mind that their teeth are visibly crooked when they smile.

The truth is that straightening your teeth goes far beyond achieving an aesthetically-pleasing smile; below are some of the most pressing reasons that you should straighten your crooked teeth:

  • Crooked teeth are very difficult to fully clean and can cause food or plaque to become trapped. In turn, this places the individual at an increased risk of developing decay. Evenly-spaced teeth that are properly aligned are easy to clean and do not trap food particles or plaque.
  • Improved bite
  • Improved speech capabilities
  • Improved chewing capabilities
  • Improved self-confidence
  • Improved oral and overall health
  • Successfully treat TMJ/TMD
  • Reduced risk for sleep apnea
  • Reduced risk of gum disease (known clinically as periodontitis)

How Do I Know If Invisalign Is Right For Me?

While of course most people would prefer to use Invisalign for their orthodontic corrections, it is important to first make sure that you qualify as an ideal Invisalign candidate.

So, how do you know if Invisalign treatment is right for you? Below are some examples of patients who may not qualify as candidates for Invisalign:

  • Regular tobacco users who are unwilling or unable to quit during treatment (both the trays and teeth may become stained or yellowed over time)
  • Patients who are unable to wear their trays for a minimum of 22 hours each day
  • Patients who have pre-existing bridgework in the mouth
  • Elderly patients who lack the dexterity needed to remove the trays and place them back inside the mouth on their own
  • Patients with extensive or severe crowding, crooked teeth, or bite issues
  • Children who are too young to properly wear and care for their Invisalign trays on their own

Alternatively, if you are capable of properly wearing (and caring for) your Invisalign trays and are not in need of extensive orthodontic corrections, it is likely that you qualify as a candidate.

The best way to determine your candidacy is to have a consultation with your trusted orthodontist.
